JoSAA Round Strategy — Freeze, Float, Slide, without fear

JoSAA runs multiple seat-allocation rounds off ONE preference list that locks when choice-filling closes. After that, your only moves each round are Freeze (stop), Float (accept but stay in the race for any higher preference), Slide (stay in the race within the same institute), or Withdraw.

The rounds, and where they bite

Choice filling

Enter EVERY college×branch you would genuinely join, ordered by true preference. More choices never hurt you; missing ones can.

The trap: The list locks. There is no mid-process reorder in JoSAA — order it right the first time.

Round 1–2

Seat allotted? Pay the seat-acceptance fee and choose Freeze / Float / Slide. Float keeps you eligible for every choice ABOVE the allotted one.

The trap: Floating never risks the seat you hold — freezing early out of fear is the classic self-inflicted loss.

Middle rounds

Upgrades happen automatically from your locked order as seats free up. Nothing to re-submit.

The trap: An upgrade is FINAL — you cannot decline it and keep the old seat. That's why a choice you don't actually want should never sit high on the list.

Final round

Last allotment. If you hold a seat on Float, it resolves to your best reachable choice.

The trap: Missing a fee/document deadline in ANY round cancels the seat — the process does not wait.

Three rules that do most of the work

Float is close to a safe default while any higher choice is still reachable.

It cannot cost you the seat you already hold — the only 'cost' is that an upgrade, if it comes, is binding.

Never rank a college you would not actually join.

An automatic upgrade into it is final. The list is a contract with your future self.

Order by desire, not by predicted probability.

The allocator already handles probability. Your job is only honesty about preference.

Asked constantly

Can I change my preference order after Round 1?

No. JoSAA locks the list when choice-filling closes. Freeze/Float/Slide are the only levers afterwards — which is why SahiSeat's preference builder focuses so hard on getting the order right before you submit.

Does Float risk the seat I already have?

No. Float keeps your current seat unless a HIGHER preference opens up, in which case you're moved up automatically (and bindingly). It never moves you down.

What's the most common JoSAA mistake?

Ranking a 'safe' option too high out of fear. Upgrades only travel toward #1 — a safety pick at #3 permanently blocks the colleges at #4–#40, even if you'd prefer several of them.
